basic question. Why are some js libraries shipped with very compact/unreadable code?

I was looking at some js files used in this page: http://ift.tt/2ljHnHP

In particular chart.js .

It is obvious that the code makes up the charts in the webpage but it looks super compact. Are those libraries done by a building tools that simply append commands one after another? Is it a way to make reverse engineering harder?
